Syria: Idlib locals flock to markets ahead of Eid al-Adha festivities

Idlib markets witnessed signs of recovery as shoppers flocked to make purchases a day before the religious holiday of Eid al-ِِAdha on Monday.

Some store owners reported growing demand for children’s clothes and candies. However, they added that sales were not as good as the numbers of visitors.

“Parents are just trying to buy children’s clothes, they want to clothe their children, and give them priority over themselves. When you see the crowd here, you would say: oh God, there are many people, [but the truth] that something is heartbreaking them and they are sad when they want to buy things, but they cant,” owner of a children’s clothing store, Mahmoud Fakhoury said.

“There is a weak demand at the markets due to the high prices, and the situation is difficult for everyone, thanks to God there is movement in the markets, but it is weak,” another store owner, Muhammad Hallaq, added.

Idlib hosts a large population of people who were displaced during the Syrian conflict and are largely unemployed. They also oppose the government of President Bashar Al-Assad.

SOT, Adnan al-Imam, displaced in Idlib (Arabic): “Regarding the demand in Eid markets, there is a large market demand but people are buying according to their priorities. Firstly they buy clothes for their children and then they buy sweets for their homes. As you know, Eid is part of the Sunnah, and we should cheer and rejoice, but honestly, as one of the displaced, I feel the pain as I miss our home and lands, I miss the joy and pleasure that we were accustomed to previously when we met our loved ones and relatives. We miss all of that. Nowadays each of us lives in a different place. I have relatives in Turkey, and some of them are close to Idlib in the northern Aleppo region. Each of us is in a different place, and for this reason, the joy of Eid al-Adha is incomplete, and we feel sad to be away from our relatives, loved ones and those whom we have lost and can’t meet again, but we can visit their graves and pay tributes to them, that all what we can do.”

SOT, Muhammad Hallaq, store owner (Arabic): “The [Eid] rituals this year have an atmosphere of displacement and destruction, as many were displaced. There is a weak demand at the markets due to the high prices, and the situation is difficult for everyone, thanks to God there is movement in the markets, but it is weak.”

SOT, Mahmoud Fakhoury, owner of a children’s clothing store (Arabic): “As you can see, I have a children’s clothing store. Parents are just trying to buy children’s clothes, they want to dress their children, and give them priority over themselves. When you see the crowd here, you would say: oh God, there are many people, [but the truth] that something is heartbreaking them and they are sad when they want to buy widgets, but they can’t. The reasons differ but the [main] reason obviously is that their pockets are empty, the living conditions very difficult.”
