Tea and geography lovers can now combine their passions with a sip of tasty tea at this unique cafe on the Iraq-Iran border near Halabja.

Several tourists from Iraq and other customers from Iran enjoyed a cup of tasty tea at the unique cafe situated on the border with Iran in the Byara region on Wednesday.

The tea cafe is run by an elderly Iraqi man named Affan and famously known as ‘Mam Darwish,’ meaning ‘Uncle Darwish.’

A small stream separates the border between Iraq and Iran, running next to the cafe. Customers can be seen hopping from one country to the next.

“I sell tea to the Iraqis for 250 dinars (€0.14), and to the Iranians by stretching my hand beyond the stream for one thousand Iranian rials (€0.20),” said the tea master Uncle Darwish.

Many Iranian customers are happy about this feature of the place, where they can return to drink tea without an entry visa or a passport stamp and even a negative COVID test.

SOT, Affan Hama Saeed, Cafe owner (Kurdish): “My name is Affan Hama Saeed, and I’m nicknamed ‘Mam Darwish,’ from the Biara area. I own this cafe on the border between Iraq and Iran. A stream about half a metre wide separates this cafe from Iran. Iraqi, Iranian and foreign tourists visit me as well. I sell tea to the Iraqis for 250 dinars, and to the Iranians by stretching my hand beyond the waterway (Saqia) for one thousand Iranian tomans.”

SOT, Affan Hama Saeed, Cafe owner (Kurdish): “I open this cafe every day from seven in the morning until seven in the evening, and my family helps me managing it, and I rely on it to secure a living, and thankfully the work is very good.”

SOT, Alfqar Emad, Tourist from Babylon (Arabic): “My name is Thualfaqar Emad from Babylon. I’m a tourist here in Sulaimanya, I came here to Byara to drink the distinguished tea from the tea master ‘Kaka Darwish,’ the tea has its distinct taste. The remarkable thing here is that this touristic destination area connects two countries, Iraq and Iran, and there is no real border, except for this tea master. I’m here standing on the border line with Iran, if I cross this line I’m here in Iraq. There is no need here for passports or visas and even stamps or recongised PCR coronavirus tests. You can come to chill out and have fun and enjoy this spectacular nature and the good air, and pure nature, and have some tea from this tea vendor here. They are good people. This destination is very beautiful.”
