Republican Senator Ted Cruz has attempted to defend his decision to take his family on holiday to Mexico as millions of his constituents in Texas are left without heat or power.

An ‘Arctic outbreak’ sent the Southern US into a winter crisis, with power grids severely affected and fresh water reservoirs running almost dry.

Snowstorms in Texas have caused widespread power outages, with some reported to be sleeping in their cars with the engines running in a bid to stay warm.

The Texas lawmaker told reporters that he had taken the decision to leave the country “to be a good dad” to his daughters, but returned early because it “didn’t feel right” to be away.
