Texas Republicans are pushing for a referendum to decide if the state should secede from the United States. It is now part of the Texas GOP’s party platform to hold a vote in 2023 on whether or not the state should leave the US. Voting to leave the US would, of course, be treason because states don’t have the right to secede from the Union. Texas actually has a history of secession. It seceded from Mexico in 1835 in order to keep slavery, and then seceded from the United States in 1861 to keep slavery again.
