Thailand: Cleaning efforts underway following disastrous oil pipeline leak in Gulf of Thailand

Cleaning efforts were underway on Mae Ram Phueng Beach to salvage the shoreline in Rayong after an oil spill contaminated the waters in the Gulf of Thailand, Sunday. According to local reports, the area has been heavily affected by the disaster caused by last week’s pipeline leak.
“In just three hours of an oil spill, it has created such havoc. And I don’t want this to happen. I don’t blame anyone, I don’t punish anyone”, said Thai Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Varawut Silpa-archa. “So, I ask the governor to talk to all the concerned agencies, and factories in Rayong provinces, and all provinces that have this kind of industry to really double-check on the equipment,” he stressed.
Pensri Sukja, a local, added, “Fishermen can’t make a living, because of the damage the pollution is causing to the natural resources.”
It is estimated that 50,000 litres of oil leaked from the pipeline owned by Star Petroleum Refining last week.

And [there are] no tourists here now. Corona was a problem, and now the oil again. That is why I think it is terrible for all people.”
