Large groups of people took to the streets of Bangkok on Sunday to protest the Lese-majeste law, which makes it an offense to insult the royal family.
Section 112 of the Thai Criminal Code makes it illegal to defame, insult, mock or threaten the king, queen, heir-apparent or the regent and is punishable by up to fifteen years in prison.
During the rally, many participants held signs calling for the cancellation of the law, whilst one group performed a sit-down demonstration, blocking a central road.
One protester expressed hope that the article will be abolished, stating, “We should be able to exercise basic human rights and able to have free speech since we are declared as a democratic country.”
On November 19, Prime Minister Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha threatened to apply Section 112 after protesters gathered over the rejection of a draft charter backed by the anti-government movement.
Thailand has been ruled by a constitutional monarchy since 1932 but protesters claim recent rulings are bringing the country closer to an absolute monarchy, severely restricting freedom of speech.

SOT, Protester: “As for now, it feels like it doesn’t really get anywhere but I’m hopeful. I want to see this through the end, definitely the article 112 should be abolished and our friends should be free. We should be able to exercise basic human rights and able to have free speech since we are declared as a democratic country.”
SOT, Protester: “It’s actually very positive to see so many people coming here to support the campaign to abolish the law called 112.”
SOT, Protester: “We also want to call for justice for all our friends in prison who have been convicted for pleading guilty for defaming the royalty but they are in prison so we just want to call for justice for them today as well.”
