A flower shop owner from Turkey named Sinan Bicer has a pet squirrel named Mahmut, which he adopted after finding the animal as a baby inside a cut tree, as seen in Kadirli, Osmaniye, on Saturday.

The pair shares a symbiotic relationship that is unconventional, as can be seen from their interactions. Mahmut sits on his desk as Bicer gets work done. When Bicer meets his friends or goes into another shop, Mahmut accompanies him, sitting on his shoulders.

“We tried to leave it to nature twice. He came back to us twice. So we left it to nature, but it doesn’t leave us. That’s why we don’t want to leave it anymore either,” said Bicer.

The human-friendly squirrel visits other local shop owners, also attracting customers.
Bicer feels like Mahmut is now part of his family.

SOT, Sinan Bicer, Squirrel Owner (Turkish): “When he was just a cub, a lumberjack friend found Mahmut in a tree hole. They brought the squirrel to us because they thought we could take care of it. I also owned it and fed it for the first two months by giving milk with a syringe.”

SOT, Sinan Bicer, Squirrel Owner (Turkish): “We were putting a jar of hot water next to him because he was cold. We also put a piece of blanket in which he lay curled up. This is how our story with Mahmut began.”

SOT, Sinan Bicer, Squirrel Owner (Turkish): “After that, he switched to solid food. He’s eating nuts, peanuts, acorns, seeds right now. He eats whatever we give him, he doesn’t refuse.”

SOT, Sinan Bicer, Squirrel Owner (Turkish): “We tried to leave it to nature twice. He came back to us twice. So we left it to nature, but it doesn’t leave us. That’s why we don’t want to leave it anymore either.”

SOT, Sinan Bicer, Squirrel Owner (Turkish): “He also does not know how to protect himself in natural life, he has become a very humane-lover animal.”

SOT, Sinan Bicer, Squirrel Owner (Turkish): “He visits all the shopkeepers. They take him away, love him at work, and then bring him back. It also attracts a lot of attention from customers and they came and started to like it.”

SOT, Sinan Bicer, Squirrel Owner (Turkish): “So, he became one of our family. This is how we continue our daily lives with Mahmut.”
