Scientists cannot explain what is happening in the UAE but everything is in the dust! Residents wake up in a country shrouded in a dusty haze for two days, severely reducing visibility, causing flight disruptions and slowing traffic.

Officials from the National Center for Meteorology explained that what was observed in the UAE was neither a dust storm nor a sandstorm. “What happened in the UAE is not a dust or sandstorm. We don’t call it a storm. It’s dusty.” Dr. Habib says: “This dust suspension comes from the south and southeast of the country. In the south, low pressure associated with fresh and strong winds in the southeast between the UAE and Oman. So the sandstorm happened there, not here.”

“The direction of the wind blew sand into our country over the UAE, resulting in a loss of visibility. But there is no fresh wind here. The dusty air mass from their area moved to our area. So here we didn’t actually see the occurrence of a dust or sandstorm.” Both phenomena are different, although both are composed of soil particles. Sandstorms are mostly sand particles with a local effect, as gravity does not allow sand particles to move a long distance.

But dust particles differ in that they are composed of silt and clay, which form natural colloidal and nanoparticles. Exposure to dust particles appears to be much more widespread, sometimes even across continents.

Shedding light on the varying low visibility in the country, he adds: “In some areas in the north, visibility was less than 100 or 200m. One weather station recorded a visibility of about 400m, and another station in the southeast in the UAE recorded a visibility of 100m.” Dr Habib explains: “There are two types of weather stations in the UAE. One is a human weather station and the other is an AWS automated weather station.”
