Another strong storm is approaching the Swiss Alps, forecasting another 110 cm in some places. It is wet and heavy and carries a great danger of avalanches. After precious little snow in February and March, this month sees significant snowfall. Avalanche risk in parts of the western Alps in France and Switzerland is currently at level 4 on a five-point scale, but not for long.
This means that there is a “high” probability of avalanches.
“Stormy weather and new snow, high avalanche danger will prevail in the west,” the Swiss Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research warned. Heavy sleet and strong winds combined to create a dangerous situation.
Some ski resorts close lifts and part of the slopes. Alison Grist is in Courchevel in the French Alps, where it snowed heavily, but the conditions on the slopes today are not as pleasant as yesterday.
“Very wet conditions today, thick powder at the top and heavier at the bottom. Wet on the chair lifts as the snow is wet. Heavy snow is expected tonight and tomorrow!” she told us.
Wet and harsh conditions are reported by more and more tourists who are in the mountains. Snow is also expected in the resorts of western Switzerland.
The forecast weather has already led to the cancellation of some end-of-season events.
