Taliban fighters were seen posing for photos at the mausoleum of King Amanullah Khan in Jalalabad, on Saturday, days after the city’s capture.
“This is the city of the brave, and we are brave. Thanks to Allah. We have defeated the enemy of Islam. Now we will establish the Islamic system here,” said one Taliban fighter.
On Wednesday, dozens of Jalalabad residents took to the streets to protest the removal of the national flag from Pashtunistan Square and its replacement with the white Taliban Islamic Emirate flag. Though the demonstration was met with violence from the Taliban, dozens of Afghan flags could be seen still flying in the city’s streets on Saturday.
SOT, Taliban fighter (Pashto): “Thanks to Allah, we are very happy to be here. This is the city of the brave, and we are brave. Thanks to Allah. We have defeated the enemy of Islam. Now we will establish the Islamic system here. People are happy with us.”
Taliban fighter (Pashto): “We are very happy. At the moment, seeing the happiness of the people, we pray that such an Islamic system be implemented in the whole world.”
SOT, Afghan citizen (Pashto): “This is what we want. Everything has been systemized and changed since the Islamic Emirate was formed. But our national flag will never change. No country in the world will change the Afghan flag and us.”
SOT, Afghan citizen (Pashto): “Thanks to Allah. The national flag of Afghanistan is our identity. And we have faith. These days flags are our identity. Both should be respected. You don’t want to take down a flag. We want to give this message. That both flags should be waved. Not one of them. No flag should be insulted.”
