Hi, my name is Elly Albers and I’m originally from Holland and my rescue work started like 30 years ago. I moved from Holland to Bonaire, an island in the Dutch Caribbean. And I started to set up the animal shelter here on the island. Over the years, Elly has helped numerous birds, including flamingos. In 2018, we got a problem with flamingos and that season 500 flamingos mostly chicks they all stranded. There were found on the streets malnourished. The parents just left their babies. We had no idea what was going on and I started to take care of the flamingos and I learned a lot about flamingos. We had a full team, all volunteers. Everybody works voluntarily, nobody’s actually on the payroll and we worked around the clock and we were really successful. 

And then in 2019, actually the same happened again. After the breeding season, we started to get a lot of flamingos. It costs a lot of money to take care of birds. And I started the foundation, the Bonaire Wild Bird Rehab, because without a foundation you cannot really raise money. So that’s when the foundation was founded in 2018 and since then, I’ve rescued birds. People on the island know by now if they find a bird, where to bring it. I do every bird not just flamingos, or only flamingos, it can be house sparrows, parakeets, parrots, pelicans. It doesn’t matter. A bird is a bird and I don’t think it’s important if it’s a protected bird or not. And that’s what I do.

I try to save as many birds as possible. From the two seasons we had to take care of all those flamingos. There are still flamingos coming back. And there’s also a group of flamingos who were released two or three times. And for unknown reasons they could not do it in the wild. They were found again on the streets. So those birds, I am still feeding in the morning. They fly in in the morning and I will give some Flamingo foods, some floating pallets. And the only thing I’m doing right now is Moni Turing. And I can see the group is getting smaller. It started with 70 birds from two seasons. And I think we’re mostly up to 40 and hopefully when they are mature and that’s between the third and the fourth year, they will start to do their own thing and they will not come for food anymore.
