Thousands of people took to the streets of Buenos Aires, Monday, in a demonstration to demand justice for Barracas Central youth player Lucas Gonzalez killed by the Argentinian police.
“They took away the dream of my friend, who just wanted to play first division, like all of us,” a friend told demonstrators as Gonzalez’s friends and parents addressed the crowd from a stage set in front of the Buenos Aires Courts.
The 17-year-old was shot by police officers on Wednesday while he was in a car with other friends returning home from training in the Buenos Aires district of Barracas.
The three policemen involved in the incident claimed the teenagers were acting suspiciously when they stopped to buy juice at a store near the training ground. The boys tried to escaped as the armed men were in civilian clothes. A car chase ensued and the police fired at the vehicle, hitting Gonzalez in the head twice. The youth player died in the hospital the following day.
The officers have been arrested and charged with aggravated homicide.
