Thousands of people have gathered in Hong Kong to attend a vigil in memory of the victims of the 1989 Tiananmen massacre.

The annual event was banned for the first time this year by authorities citing concerns over the spread of Covid-19.

Police clashed with protesters in Mong Kok, after more than 3,000 riot police officers were deployed to enforce the ban.

On 4 June 1989, Chinese troops opened fire on pro-democracy demonstrators on Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Some commemorate the events of that day as a symbol of resistance against China’s oppression.

The vigil took place on the same day a law was passed in Hong Kong banning any mockery of the Chinese national anthem.
