Moderate to severe thunderstorms are also possible with this system, from Arizona into New Mexico. Strong, destructive gusts and flooding are the main effects to look out for during the worst storms

Rainfall totals will range to 1 inch in Arizona, with 1 to 2 inches forecast for parts of New Mexico. Localized higher amounts are possible in the mountains and on the western slopes. Some of the higher elevations in New Mexico—mostly above 9,000 feet—may even see some light snowfall.

The National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a flash flood warning for Maricopa and Pinal counties

“Turn around, don’t drown when you encounter flooded roads. The majority of flood deaths occur in vehicles,” the weather service said. “The hilly area has hundreds of low-lying passes that are potentially dangerous during heavy rain.”

The weather service advises not to try to cross flooded roads and to find an alternative route.

Rain is expected to continue into the early morning hours, although rainfall is forecast to be limited in the Valley.
Several areas received more than an inch of rain during the day. The most was reported near Lake Pleasant and in Mesa at 1.3 inches.
