Greece’s largest island is struggling to recover from the horrific damage caused by torrential rains over the weekend that left at least two people dead.

A 50-year-old man was swept away by the current while he was in his car in Crete, while a 50-year-old woman who was reportedly in the same car was also found dead.

Roads were turned into rivers in coastal areas, while the flood washed away many cars. The operation center of the Greek Fire Service received 453 calls within an hour of the incident.

“All forces of the fire department and civil defense were put on alert. However, the severity of the phenomenon was so strong at the local level that it exceeded any meteorological forecasts.

As for Crete, the Civil Protection Operations Center contacted all involved businesses and government agencies to be on high alert. It was also deemed necessary to close all gorges in Crete,” said the spokesman of the fire service.

The deputy interior minister and other government officials visited the area and announced a package of measures that includes €400,000 in direct support and immediate compensation for those affected by the deadly storm.
