After a series of hurricanes in the south, the storm system threatens North Carolina, Virginia and Florida. About 6.3 million people in eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia are on hurricane watch until 9 p.m. ET Thursday as the Storm Prediction Center warns they face a triple whammy of strong winds, hail and potential hurricanes . The latest warnings come after at least 62 hurricane reports hit the region this week alone, coupled with severe storms that have damaged homes and businesses in several states.
“Severe thunderstorms are possible on Thursday in eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, as well as in parts of the Florida peninsula,” the forecast center warned. “Destructive gusts of wind and hail are possible.”
The strongest of the storms could potentially hit Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and Norfolk in Virginia, as well as Tampa and St. Petersburg in Florida. The severe weather system has caused thousands of flights to be delayed, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Flights bound for New York’s LaGuardia Airport were ground to a halt and there were delays at John F. Kennedy International Airport and nearby Newark Liberty International Airport.
The storms also impacted air travel in Florida, with delays reported Thursday afternoon in Orlando, Miami and Tampa, according to the FAA.
Several rounds of severe and deadly weather have engulfed the south in recent days, * at least three people.

A man died in East Texas on Tuesday when a tree fell on a van in the Whitehouse neighborhood, according to Smith County’s emergency management coordinator. Later that day, a man in Georgia died when a storm swept through Bryan County.
The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-2 tornado was observed in the city of Monetta in South Carolina, with a maximum wind speed of 130 mph.
Four homes were destroyed and another five sustained major damage in Allendale County, South Carolina, where the storm was suspected, the state emergency management agency said. The department added that at least three people received injuries incompatible with life.
Relentless severe weather also contributed to storm-related injuries and rescues due to fast-moving flood waters in several states.
