Extreme weather conditions have been announced this weekend in the Andes. The effects are starting to show, with more than 300 vehicles stranded as heavy snowfall and a hurricane hit both sides of the international border.
At 13:00, Cristo Redentor International Passage was closed, leaving dozens of trucks, buses, and cars stranded due to adverse weather conditions.

The rescue operation was complicated because two trucks collided and blocked all lanes at the height of the dangerous La Soberanía bend, on the 1229th kilometer of the national route seven between the cities of Uspallata and Las Cuevas.
As pointed out by the National Gendarmerie, the current climate is not recommended for travel in the high mountains, as more than 30 centimeters of snow have already accumulated.

Authorities say work is still ongoing to remove trucks and other vehicles stranded at the Los Libertadores intersection. This passage connects the country with Argentina from the Valparaiso region.

Evidence collected by local media MDZ Online shows a complicated situation where people are exposed to extreme temperatures without hot water and enough food.

“We are all stuck in the Cordillera; six buses, cars, and trucks are waiting inside the tunnel. The route is full of trucks. The authorities are inactive; there is no help. Carbon monoxide from cars is huge,” the bus driver said from the spot.

The passenger told the media above: “The children are coping with the situation, but recently the girl lost consciousness. You can’t get off the bus because there’s a thunderstorm and snowstorm outside.”

It is expected that adverse weather conditions will persist for another two days in the highland zone.
