An historic snowstorm in central Spain saw motorists stuck on motorways for hours as the army was deployed to rescue them.

The heaviest snowfall for almost half a century caused travel chaos around Madrid, where a red alert warning was in place and residents were urged to stay at home.

The blizzard, which was brought to the region by Storm Filomena, caused the Spanish capital’s Barajas Airport to come to a standstill, cancelling over 50 flights.
