Hundreds of anti-government protesters rallied outside the Ennahda Movement headquarters in Kairouan on Sunday, to mark Republic Day, the 64th anniversary of Tunisia’s independence.

Protesters removed and burned the banner above the headquarters. They called for the dissolution of parliament and accused the government of worsening social, economic and health conditions in the country, especially in regards to the handling of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as cases of infections are rising.

“In the past, 5 Dinars were enough for the whole day, today 5 Dinars won’t buy a tin of tomatoes. We demand that (President) Kais Saeed dissolves the parliament immediately,” said one local resident.

Anti-government demonstrations also took place acrossed the nation in Nabeul, Sousse, Sfax and Tozeur.

SOT, Local resident (Arabic): “The only one who was good to his people is (former Tunisian President Zine El Abidine) Ben Ali, but he was toppled. In the past, 5 Dinars were enough for the whole day, today 5 Dinars won’t buy a tin of tomatoes. We demand that Kais Saeed dissolves the parliament immediately because he is one of the people, and we call him to apply Chapter 80, or the people will take the streets again. We demand the PM Hichem Mechichi to spare the security forces from confronting us because they are oppressed just like us. They have been killed, oppressed and intimidated by the Ennahda Movement. And this was confirmed by Ennahda MP Bhiri when he said once that we shall liberate Ennahda by blood. I want my voice to be heard, and I bear full responsibility for this, especially regarding the security personnel. There is no terrorism in Tunisia except Ennahda Movement; the terrorism in Tunisia comes from Ennahda Movement. We call on Kais Saeed to dissolve the parliament so that the country returns to Presidential rule, or the people in Ben Gardane, Bizerte and Tataouine, in the northern, southern and central parts of Tunisia will all take the streets.”

SOT, Local resident (Arabic): “I call on the Ennahda Movement, take to the streets. I am a woman and I took to the street to demand the rights of Tunisia. Do not be afraid, if you want to call the police to arrest me, I won’t be afraid. But where are you? You are hiding your heads like an ostrich because you are a bunch of thieves, where are you? You are hiding in the cafes because you have stolen the country.”
