A basketball field in Ezzahra was transformed into a hospital unit to treat COVID-19 patients under the impulsion of the town’s mayor, Rayen Hamzaoui.

A team of medical volunteers were seen tending to the patients in the makeshift COVID unit on Thursday.

With a current capacity of 20 beds, the field hospital received the COVID-positive patients from the region in need of urgent assistance.

“People’s only concern is to find oxygen, and it is not that available, thus we came up with this idea and we called on everyone living in this area to participate in creating a centre in Ezzahra to isolate COVID patients,” said the mayor of Ezzahra.

The initiative is expected to reduce pressure on public hospitals reaching their maximum capacity, with the help of the regional businesspeople providing the equipment for the new facility in emergency conditions and locals nurses assisting the patients.

SOT, Rayen Hamzaoui, Mayor of Ezzahra (Arabic): “The idea came because the city of Ezzahra is not isolated from Tunisia, and the statistics are very high and there are no places for people in public and private hospitals. People’s only concern is to find oxygen, and it is not that available, thus we came up with this idea and we called on everyone living in this area to participate in creating a centre in Ezzahra to isolate COVID patients or a field hospital that we prepared in record time, in a week. As you can see now, there are 20 beds equipped with all modern equipment.”

SOT, Rayen Hamzaoui, Mayor of Ezzahra (Arabic): “We have a volunteer medical staff, more than 28 doctors, and a semi-medical staff too are available here. I mean, we are talking here about what looks like a private hospital. All the residents of Ezzahra area have contributed, such as businessmen. Even simple merchants, butchers, grocery owners and even the unemployed contributed to this achievement.”

SOT, Nahid, Physiotherapist (Arabic/French): “I came here to the field hospital to help patients with the necessary rations. We are a team of 28 people, a medical and paramedical team, nurses assistant, nurses, anaesthetists, and doctors of reanimation unit, came here to help COVID-19 patients.”

SOT, Saleh Shubeir, Secretary-General of the Young Chamber in Ezzahra City (Arabic): “In fact, until the last moment, the field hospital started working a while ago and until yesterday, and today we still receive subsidies. All people are happy and they help. All people help and they are happy. The groups helped from businessmen, people, small traders and restaurants also helped. All the people helped as much as they could.”
