Turkey: Archaeological treasures unearthed at Istanbul Haydarpasa train station

Ongoing archaeological excavations at Haydarpasa train station continue to unearth ruins and historic artefacts ranging from the Ottoman, Roman and Byzantine periods, as seen on Wednesday.
The excavation work led by teams of archaeologists, workers, and museum experts is being carried out in the Asian side of Istanbul, which was anciently known as Chalcedon (the Land of the Blind).
“The oldest architectural remains found in the excavations up to date are from the 3rd-4th century. It’s what we think could be a square-plan tomb monument made of cut stone blocks,” stated Mehmet Ali Polat, archaeologist and Head of Haydarpasa excavations.
Among the findings are structural remains from a Hellenistic tomb, a 5th-century church, a bath, gold coins belonging to Chalcedon, as well as a World War II shelter built in the 1940s
“Most of the space will be used as an archaeological park. So, there will be trains to the station from parts where the remains are few or none, and the rest of the euphemistic density you see in the back will be exhibited. In other words, this will be a station site, it will remain the Haydarpasa station, and the remains will be protected and displayed,” said Polat.
Haydarpasa station was built in 1909, and up until 2012, was the busiest train station in Turkey.

SOT, Mehmet Ali Polat, Archaeologist Head of Haydarpasa excavations (Turkish): “We started excavations at Haydarpasa station site in May 2018. This is about 350 acres. The projects are carried out within the framework of the renovation and improvement project of the Gar site.”

It’s what we think could be a square-plan tomb monument made of cut stone blocks. Other than that, most building developments are either from the 3rd or 4th BC. And it’s from six centuries ago. This is the northwest port of Kalkedon Ancient City. Kalkedon Ancient City has four ports: two large and two small. We’re digging right behind the northwest port.”

When the Sassanids from the East took over and set up a campsite there in the time of Heracleos, it was devastated. After this century, after the Heracleos hike, there was almost no life for a century. We can reveal this both with the architectural remains and with coins.”

SOT, Mehmet Ali Polat, Archaeologist Head of Haydarpasa excavations (Turkish): “The open door you see right behind me is the entrance to the garrison during the second world war, a bunker structure that was used as a shelter for the soldiers guarding this area to warm up or as a shelter for them to hide in the event of an attack. There are two doors here. You go in through the door. After a bit of progress, you draw a bow and reach the other door further. There are toilets in there and a lighting system. When we go back a little further, there are stones. These stones were scattered there in case of an attack, in case of soldiers entering, they could grab their own fronts and take their safety.”
