Club officials shared their reactions to the official UEFA Europe League group stage draw in Istanbul on Friday.
“Galatasaray is already very accustomed to competing in European cups, and I think these young players will adapt to this situation much more quickly, to this culture of Galatasaray and will feel comfortable and perform well in this championship,” said Galatasaray SK Vice President Bikem Kanik after the draw.
Oleg Petrov, Executive Vice President of AS Monaco FC, said he believes that the team has good chances while Olympique Marseille’s Pablo Longorio called their draw a ‘balanced group’ including Lokomotiv Moskva, Lazio and Galatasaray.
After two years without Europa League qualification, the Istanbul club Fenerbahce returned competing in a European championship.
“There are some groups that are Champions League level. So, I’m really happy with the outcome of today. And I think Fenerbahce, even before we complete our transfer level, has the potential to be one or at worst number two in this group. As we say, inshallah, I will be correcting my predictions,” said the club’s President Ali Koc after the draw.
The event followed the group stage draws for the Champions League, also held in Istanbul one day earlier. The UEFA Europa League is set to start on September 16.

SOT, Bikem Kanik, Galatasaray SK Vice President (Turkish): “It’s a good group. There will be interesting games. It’s an interesting group. This year we tried to build a team of younger, more successful players, of course, by blending some of our experienced players. Of course, there is a need of time for the adaptation of these young players, but in saying this time, Galatasaray is already very accustomed to competing in European cups, and I think these young players will adapt to this situation much more quickly, to this culture of Galatasaray and will feel comfortable and perform well in this championship. So I think we’re going to show a different team with the players that we couldn’t play in the previous qualifying stage, they will play in the group stage.”
SOT, Oleg Petrov, Monaco Executive Vice President: “Good competitors to play against, I think that will be a good fight. But that’s why we’re in this business of sports. We will perform at our best ability. “Good competitors to play against, but I think that’s why we’re in this business of sports. We will perform at our best ability. I think that we have good sorted chances. I mean what we did this year, we did our best to qualify for the Champions League, we made a very good run, in our last game against against Schakhtar Donezk we played well, we performed as a very good team. The team was fighting till the last moment. I think with what we show, with what we can do, we have very good sorted chances. We’re Monaco, we’re a good club.”
SOT, Pablo Longorio, Olympic Marseille President: “With this group, for us, we can see that it’s a balanced group with four great ambiences in all the different stadiums, playing in Moscow with Lokomotiv Moskva, playing in Olimpica in Roma against Lazio and here obviously in Istanbul. And obviously receiving all the different teams, it will be a very competitive group especially for the level of the four teams that have been playing in Europe and as well the four coaches who are coaches that we really respect, Fatih Terim, Maurizio Sarri and Marko Nikolic. It’s a very competitive, it will be a very amazing game during the group stage.”
SOT, Ali Koc, Fenerbahce President: “After two years Fenerbahce is back in the European Championships. I think it’s a very positive group for us. There are some groups that are Champions League level. So, I’m really happy with the outcome of today. And I think Fenerbahce, even before we complete our transfer level, has the potential to be one or at worst number two in this group. As we say, inshallah, I will be correcting my predictions.”
