Turkish driver Cem Bolukbasi announced that he would race for the Formula 2 championship in the upcoming 2022 season, during a ceremony and news conference in Istanbul on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old race car driver who has signed a deal with Czech-based Charouz Racing System will be the first gamer to have made a transition from F1 Esports to the real-life Formula 1 feeder series.

“I never thought I would end up in Formula 2 world championship in just a few years time so I think this is just massive news for me as well, and it’s like realising a dream for me and so I think this is the biggest day of my life until now,” said Bolukbasi, who will be also the first Turkish Formula 2 driver.

The sim driver has achieved successful results in both virtual races and tracks in recent years with the slogan ‘Virtual to Real.’ Bolukbasi has recently tested a Formula 2 car in Abu Dhabi with the Netherlands-based Van Amersfoort Racing.

“I want to be the first person to become a Formula 1 driver who was in F1 Esports so that’s why we wanted to do F1 Esports to real Formula 1 and I think this is going to be a very big and a very new story for Formula 1 as well,” Bolukbasi added.

SOT, Race car driver, Cem Bolukbasi: “It all started in 2017 for me when F1 Esports announced the official Esports series because until then I was just a gamer from 2014 onwards and when it got seriouswith Formula 1 involving in sim racing, I think it just reached the new level because it got the support that it needed and I wanted to use since the beginning as a footstep to real life racing and so I when I go world number five in 2017, then I had the chance to work with Fernando Alonso, it was the biggest opportunity for me. But I never thought I would end up in Formula 2 world championship in just a few years time so I think this is just a massive news for me as well, and it’s like realising a dream for me and so I think this is the biggest day of my life until now.”
