Firefighting efforts continued in the Manavgat district of the Antalya province on Wednesday after massive forest fires broke out.

Thick smoke was seen billowing into the sky as the blaze raged on.

Mehmet Onel, a local and volunteer, explained the fire broke out in five or six different regions and said he suspected arson to be the cause.

“Whether it was the gendarmerie, the other teams, the fire brigade or the ambulance, we tried to intervene, as much as we could. But now it’s 6, 6:30, almost 7, and there are still areas where the fire has not gone out,” he added.

Residents in the area and in a local hospital were evacuated.

SOT, Ayse Aktas, Local (Turkish): “There were very high flames and we were watching from here. Vehicles came and they all went there, *inaudible* came. Then it turned to the other side, and came in our direction.” *LOOSE TRANSLATIONS*

Whether it was the gendarmerie, the other teams, the fire brigade or the ambulance, we tried to intervene, as much as we could. But now it’s 6, 6:30, almost 7, and there are still areas where the fire has not gone out. We are trying to intervene there. But what we want from our citizens is this. Please don’t burden our current mission with insults or the like.”
