Hundreds of demonstrators came out to protest the government in Istanbul on Sunday, in response to recent reports that state-backed conservative Turkish Youth Foundation (TUGVA) - linked to the younger son of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan - illegally appointed party loyalists for positions across the state organisations.
Workers groups, opposition parties and feminist organisations called for the protest, which also voiced other concerns including the exploitation of refugee workers, low minimum wage and a lack of job security.
“Due to the bad economy managed by one man, we are heading towards the bottom of bankruptcy every minute,” a protester said.
Recently leaked documents by a former TUGVA employee also implicates in corruption allegations the Turkey Youth and Education Service Foundation (TURGEV), the Foundation to Spread Ilm (IYC) - both also linked to Bilal Erdogan -, and the conservative pro-government Ensar Foundation. TUGVA and the president’s son have dismissed all the claims.
SOT, Nazli Sen, Member of demonstration organising committee (Turkish): “The minimum wage, which is far below the wages sufficient to live humanely, is becoming the standard wage.”
SOT, Omer Faruk Gergerlioglu, HDP MP (Turkish): “Due to the bad economy managed by one man, we are heading towards the bottom of bankruptcy every minute. We are faced with a situation where the Turkish lira has lost value and Euro-Dollar and gold have gained excessive value against the Turkish lira.”
SOT, Tamer Dogan, Member of demonstration organising committee (Turkish): “Refugee workers, who become a weapon in the hands of bosses to impose servile working conditions on workers, are subjected to the heaviest exploitation.”
SOT, Dilbent Turker, Trade unionist (Turkish): “They were supposed to forbid dismissal, we saw by experience that this is a big lie. Hundreds of thousands of workers were laid off, their rights and futures stolen.”
