Chairman of the Salda Lake Conservation Association Gazi Osman Sakar explained on Sunday that the geographically unique Salda Lake was at a critical point due to surrounding construction projects and global warming. The comments came as he highlighted the issues during an interview in Burdur.

A decline in water was evident along the shoreline, such as dried up ground and puddles. The famous mineral outcrops, which appeared like a surface coral reef, could also be seen.

“Due to global warming, the water of the Salda lake is rapidly withdrawing. It is not only global warming,” explained Sakar.

The lake was a popular destination for tourists and visitors, mainly because of the mineral hydromagnesite found in its coastal waters, which was considered a cure for certain skin diseases.

According to the US space agency Nasa, Lake Salda is the only known lake in the world that contained comparable minerals to a crater on Mars called Jezero.

Space scientists claimed that comparing the rocks could prove that life once existed on Mars.
