Mayor of Istanbul Ekrem Imamoglu strongly condemned the AKP’s (Justice and Development Party) lead probe into alleged terrorist links of 557 employees at the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality at a press conference in Istanbul on Monday.
“First of all, as mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, as the mayor of a city of 16 million people, as a mayor of Istanbul with 86,000 employees, I condemn this statement,” Imamoglu stated.
The Interior Ministry claims 557 employees have connections to “terrorist” organisations including including the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, PKK, the Marxist–Leninist Communist Party, MLKP and Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front, DHKP/C.
The Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu stated the probe was not political.
Imamoglu further condemned the Interior Ministry for sponsoring terrorism, “I condemn it in another dimension, and I say that’s the statement of the Interior Ministry, look, it’s a ministry that advertises all terrorist organizations in bold, red letters. I mean, a ministry that advertises terrorist organizations from its official account. I condemn the step taken in this way and that this form of explanation is not in accordance with the state’s edict.”
The Interior Ministry has come under international attention after connections to high ranking mafia officials surfaced in early 2021 from a whistle-blower mafia leader, Sedat Peker, in exile where it was revealed the government office had been using its power to further the AKP party line using intimidation tactics to accomplish its goals.
SOT, Ekrem Imamoglu, Mayor of Istanbul (Turkish): “First of all, as mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, as the mayor of a city of 16 million people, as a mayor of Istanbul with 86,000 employees, I condemn this statement. I condemn it in another dimension, and I say that’s the statement of the Interior Ministry, look, it’s a ministry that advertises all terrorist organisations in bold, red letters. SOT, Ekrem Imamoglu, Mayor of Istanbul (Turkish): “In the Istanbul metropolitan municipality, in its subsidiaries, the procedures regarding the employment of a person are clear. In other words, a person applies, you determine that person for the job that is suitable for you from these applications, if you have decided to hire that person, then you demand some documents from him or her. In these documents, there is a criminal record, the person you want the criminal record from gets that record from the justice ministry. Then the interior minister opens an investigation in the wrong place, the justice ministry is the place that has to be investigated, because we ask for the criminal record of every employee we recruit, and if we get the clean paper, we initiate the initiative process. Therefore, in my opinion, where another investigation should be opened, is the interior ministry that said these 557 terrorists, although said 160 the day before and the day after declared that 557 terrorists, were in the Istanbul metropolitan municipality. As the interior minister, if there is such a detection but he does not take any action, if he does not go and arrest those 557 terrorists, I think the interior ministry should be the place where another investigation should be opened. I even think that the minister himself should be investigated, because he has approached this process in this way. Frankly, I, as a citizen, invite the president to take office, although he does not take action against an interior minister whom he sees as carrying such a risk and putting security at such a risk.”
