Turkey: Protesters rally against imprisonment of Bogazici students

Bogazici University students, graduates and protesters gathered outside an Istanbul courthouse on Friday to demand the immediate release of Ersin Berke Gok and Caner Perit Ozen, who have been imprisoned for three months.

Several dozen protesters and about as many journalists were seen outside the courthouse.

Protesters shouted slogans and held up banners expressing solidarity with the detainees. Bogazici student Ayliz Onaylı said during a speech that the detention of the two was unjust. A police unit in riot gear guarded the protest.

Bogazici students Ersin Berke Gok and Caner Perit Ozen have been imprisoned in Silivri high security prison since October 5th 2021, under conditions that violate international law after participating in the ‘Bogazici Resistance Movement,’ which demanded academic freedom and peacefully protested against the appointment of rectors by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Both could face somewhere between six to 32 years imprisonment.

The two fires came from this struggle, Berke and Perit. They were right next to us in our democratic university struggle. When our teachers were dismissed under all sorts of pretexts, when our clubs were closed, when our school and then our friends were handcuffed, when private security committed violence on students, when our university was blockaded by the police they were next to us. And we all broke the invisible chains that were being put on us.”
