Turkey: Relief efforts continue in northern region as death toll rises to 57

Search and rescue teams continued their efforts to discover victims of heavy flooding in Turkey’s northern Black Sea region as the official death roll rose to 57, as filmed in Kastamonu on Sunday.

Workers were seen shovelling rubble by hand and using diggers to clear the city’s streets, which were lined by partially collapsed buildings.

48 deaths were registered in Kastamonu alone, with a further eight deaths in Sinop and one in Bartin, while dozens remain missing, according to local reports.

More than 2,000 people have been evacuated in the wake of the flash floods caused by torrential rains.

SOT, Nezire Tarhan, Resident (Turkish): “First the sirens started going off, and the cops were making announcements to get your cars out of the flood. Jerkes came down from his house and got in their car to it, and that’s why there was a loss of life. The houses over there collapsed, but the cause of most people’s deaths was the announcement to get your cars out of the flood. There were two seconds or three seconds between that announcement and the flooding. I ran from here, I broke into my house, and there was water behind me. My house is on the fifth floor, and by the time I got up there, this place was full of wood.”

SOT, Musa Kartal, Resident (Turkish):“It’s been raining for two days already, they say the HEPs have exploded up there, and so has the big supply. I’ve been here for 20 years, we know it rains three days and three nights, but we haven’t seen a flood like this coming. Anyway, our elders say there’s no such flood. This flood occurred when the dams burst in the ruins.”
