Turkey: Thousands protest electricity price hikes in Mardin

Thousands of frustrated locals took to the streets of Mardin’s Kiziltepe on Sunday to rally against the recent price hikes, specifically for electricity, for the new year.
One local protester burned what appeared to be his receipt for his electricity bill as others around him cheered. The protesters then continued their chants against the price hikes before marching to the city’s square where there were minor scuffles with the police.
Similar protests were carried out in Izmir and Diyarbakir after consumers and businesses were hit with an electricity price hike of between 50-100 percent on January 1.

SOT, Seyfettin Ozer, Tradesman (Turkish): “I run bagel and pastry shops. An electricity bill of 13,300 liras and other came to one of my shops and 13,600 liras to the shop I was at. A total of 40 thousand also goes for rent. How do I pay for this? Even if I sell bagels for 10 Turkish lira each, I cannot pay these bills. Even if I sell bagels for 20 liras, I cannot pay the bills. My children are preparing dough and phyllo, we sell each bag for 8 liras. I can’t make it 20 lira. My children have been crying since yesterday. What shall we do now? Shall we move elsewhere? Tell us, what is the solution? Do we burn ourselves?

SOT, Gulistan Ulutas, Teacher (Turkish): “What food and drink can employees with minimum wage buy? We can’t get warm. We freeze inside the house. Even though we are dressed in layers, we are freezing inside the house. We cannot do anything but bring our children to and from the hospital. At the very least, we demand that these hikes be withdrawn.”
