Families of East Turkestan nationality living in Turkey gathered in front of Istanbul Palace of Justice, in Caglayan district, calling for the closure of the “concentration camps” in China, where they stated that their relatives were being held, and filed a criminal complaint against the Chinese nationals they deemed responsible, demanding their “arrest” on Tuesday.
Around 100 people of Uyghur Muslim community members and volunteer Turkish lawyers staged a demonstration and protested China’s policies towards Uyghurs. Protesters could be seen holding signs in support of Uyghurs, as well as blue masks adorned with the flag of East Turkestan. Photos of some Chinese officials were laid on the ground.
“The Chinese government has set up concentration camps in our country and put millions of innocent people there. They torture them, unfortunately, our women are systematically raped,” claimed Medine Nazimi, an Uyghur. She added, “They assimilate children by forcibly removing them from their mothers in concentration camps and raising them as Chinese.”
Volunteer lawyers made a joint press statement on behalf of the group after submitting the petition to the Istanbul Chief Prosecutor’s Office and called for the closure of the Chinese “concentration camps”.
Several human rights groups, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have published reports accusing China of committing Uyghur genocide, sending Uyghurs to do forced labour, as well as forcibly sterilising them. Human rights groups put the figure of detained Uyghurs at around one million.
Meanwhile, Beijing denies the allegations of human rights abuses in China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, and says camps holding Uyghur Muslims have been established for reeducation purposes in response to “extremism.”
SOUNDBITES:
SOT, Medine Nazimi, Uighur (Turkish): “The Chinese government has set up concentration camps in our country and put millions of innocent people there. They torture them, unfortunately our women are systematically raped. Women are given forced abortions and are neutered with needles and drugs, which are unknown. At the same time, the organs of young people and especially men who are taken to concentration camps are taken and these organs are sold to Muslim countries under the name of halal organs. They assimilate children by forcibly removing them from their mothers in concentration camps and raising them as Chinese. I’m against it as an Uighur. We have the right to live like all other people. Our difference is never a crime.”
SOT, Gulden Sonmez, Volunteer Lawyer (Turkish): “These East Turkestanis you see here are only a part of the relatives of the victims who are held in concentration camps. Today, we, as lawyers for some of them and as the representatives of some of the Turkish citizens held there and also the representatives of the relatives of those Turkish citizens, have filed a criminal complaint with the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.”
