There’s no shortage of deep sea animals caught on ROV Hercules’s camera while exploring Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. Our Corps of Exploration spotted these deep sea critters while exploring Woollard Seamount, a previously unexplored seamount located roughly 40 nautical miles north of Hōlanikū (Kure Atoll).
Did you know that the ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian Language) name for eel is “puhi”? Cusk eels like the ones in this video aren’t true eels but actually bony-fish named for their eel-like appearance. Halosaurs are also “eel-shaped” with their elongated bodies.
