UAE: Singapore rainforest pavilion offers oasis for Expo 2020 Dubai guests

Visitors of the Dubai-hosted Expo 2020 on Friday were able to view Singapore’s vision of a sustainable oasis in the desert at the Singapore Pavilion.

“The Singapore pavilion basically reflects our vision as a city and nature for the city. Singapore is known to have limited resources, but though we are dense as a city and as a country,” explained Ar Yap Lay Bee, Deputy commissioner-general of the Singapore Pavilion.

“We incorporate and brace nature in our built environment. So this story is reflected in the design of the Singapore Pavilion,” added Bee.

The Singapore Pavilion is a net-zero energy usage structure which uses solar panels to generate electricity.

The pavilion also features a solar reverse-osmosis desalination system which is used to water over 170 varieties of plants, which are maintained with the help of machine-learning trained robots.
The Expo 2020 show opened doors this Friday and is set to run until March 31 2022.

We start at the rooftop where we have solar panels to collect and harvest sun energy and we use it to power the ground water through desalination underground. When the water is harvested we use it to meet the operational needs of the pavilion.”

SOT, Ar Yap Lay Bee, Deputy commissioner-general of Singapore Pavilion: “We have the climbing robots, they are machine-trained and they can recognise all the 170 varieties of plants in the pavilion. Together with their sensors they are able to collect data like oxygen, humidity and so forth. Overall, again, it will also helps us to translate this whole vision of how the nature and the digital ecosystems are being integrated.”
