Community members in Newington, Kent, unveiled the recently reconstructed foundations of a Romano-British temple uncovered in 2018, on Tuesday.
Members of the public could also view artefacts originally found in the excavation off Newington High Street.
“That means it goes back to about 2000 years ago and it was originally uncovered as part of an excavation that discovered a small industrial roman town here. It was in a remarkable state of preservation, the temple as well as the town itself, and has told us an awful lot about Newington’s heritage,” Sue Flipping, of the Newington History Group, said.
“Finding something like that on a housing development site is a nightmare for the housing developer because it holds up all the development,” she continued, adding that construction had to stop building for about 18 months. “That’s why we’re so pleased that I’ve actually turned around and turned that nightmare into something really positive for Newington,” Flipping noted.
The reconstruction of the 2,000-year-old temple using the original flints was completed by the Newington History Group and Swale and Thames Archaeology Survey Company (SWAT).
