Protesters marched through Manchester on the first day of the Conservative Party Conference on Sunday.
Police security was high at today’s anti-Tory protest, which was organised by The People’s Assembly.
Protesters marched through the city and gathered in Castlefield Bowl where some speakers took to the stage. Among those speaking was Labour MP, Barry Gardiner.
“Boris told us he had a plan. A great British tory plan, but it wasn’t for social care. It wasn’t for our schools. It wasn’t for the homeless. No, it was to privatise the NHS, to make the climate crisis worse, it was to give energy companies tax breaks and issue oil and gas licenses on the cheap,” the MP said to the crowd.
Activists called for reforms from the government, including an end to the controversial issue regarding the fuel crisis, more financial support for the National Health Service and a reform to the policing bill and the health and care bill.

SOT, Protester: “We’ve come here today to protest against the health and care bill that’s currently going through Parliament and it’s basically the corporate privatised takeover bill the Tories are pushing through at the moment.”

SOT, Protester: “The government are an absolute disgrace, people are dying, people are being discriminated against left right and centre.”

SOT, Protester: “I really want action on climate change so trying to get Boris Johnson to commit some promises that can actually change things for the world.”

SOT, Barry Gardiner, MP: “Boris told us he had a plan. A great British Tory plan, but it wasn’t for social care. It wasn’t for our schools. It wasn’t for the homeless. No, it was to privatise our NHS, to make the climate crisis worse, it was to give energy companies tax breaks and to issue oil and gas licenses on the cheap.”

SOT, Barry Gardiner, MP: “I’m here for the same reasons everybody else is because we’re fed up with the government which doesn’t listen to the people, we’re fed up with the government that doesn’t do anything for the people, that leaves people without the ability to put a roof over their heads, to feed their families and to warm their homes, and that’s what it’s about, it’s a about the basic rights and this government has got it totally wrong.”
