US President Joe Biden criticised the leaders of China and Russia for not attending the COP26 climate summit in a speech in Glasgow on Tuesday.
“I think, it has been a big mistake, quite frankly, for China not showing up. The rest of the world, when they look at China and say: ‘What values are they providing?’ They lost influence around the world and all the people here at COP. The same way I would argue with regard to Russia,” Biden said.
Neither Russian President Vladimir Putin nor Chinese leader Xi Jinping attended the summit, but both countries sent delegations to the talks, which were scheduled to run for a fortnight until 14 November.
China has been considered the world’s largest carbon dioxide emitter, followed by the US, with Russia in 5th place after the EU and India.

SOT, Joe Biden, US president: “Glasgow must start with - you will be tired hearing me say it - but a decisive decade of action so we can keep the limit of 1,5 degrees [Celsius] within reach of us and the rest of the world. We have to keep accelerating our progress. Todays agreement by more than 100 countries representing 85 per cent of the worlds forest, to hold and reverse the forestation by 2030 is a great example of the kind of ambition we need and the US is proud to have initiated and supported it.”

SOT, Joe Biden, US president: “If you take a look at gas prices and you take a look at oil prices, that is a consequence of, thus far, the refusal of Russia or of the OPEC nations to pump more oil. We will see what happens on that score sooner than later.”

SOT, Joe Biden, US president: “The fact that China tried to assert - understandably - a new role in the world as a world leader, not showing up? Come on, the single most important thing and it got the attention of the world is climate, everywhere. From Iceland to Australia, it is just a gigantic issue and they walked away. How do you do that and claim to be able for the leadership now. Same with Putin in Russia, you know his Tundra is burning, he has serious climate problems and he is numb on the willingness to do anything.”
