Birmingham’s Nightingale Club, also locally known as the “The Gale”, has been repurposed as a temporary pop-up COVID-19 vaccination centre, as seen on Saturday.
The city’s oldest LGBTQ+ club offered its venue to the NHS to help administer the jabs to the younger demographic, specifically those aged 18-24.
The owner of the club Lawrence Barton said that the club is aiming to reach out to as many young people as possible because “some of them may have not had the vaccine already, some of them may have been resistant to having it, or they can come along and have their second vaccine. So we’ve been actively and positively targeting those particular people.”
Barton also said that “it’s a trial day today but if successful, we can do this every week, we can provide this to our community every week.”
People aged 18-34 reportedly account for one-fifth of UK hospital admissions for COVID currently. The government has attempted to incentivise young people to get vaccinated with initiatives like discounted takeaways and the eventual implementation of vaccine passports in September.
