UK: Border officers relocated to Dover from Heathrow amid surge in English Channel crossings

Migrants crossing the English Channel on inflatable boats were seen escorted by UK Border Force officers towards the processing unit in Dover on Monday, amid a surge in small vessels carrying asylum seekers trying to reach the English coast.

Border Force officers were seen accompanying migrants into a makeshift processing facility in the port of Dover before taking them away to temporary accommodation and beginning the formal application process for asylum.

To deal with the surge in illegal English Channel crossings, Heathrow and other major airports in the UK have diverted Border Force officers to the port of Dover to help with processing the new arrivals.

Local media reports that a record of 3,500 migrants from Africa and the Middle East arrived in the UK across the English Channel last month.
