UK: Dozens arrested as XR activists use lock-on devices to block London roads, junctions

Protesters from the environmental activist group Extinction Rebellion were arrested as they blocked roads in central London on Tuesday.
The demonstration came on the second day of the activists’ planned two-week rallies.
Protesters could be seen being cut from chains by police after they had locked themselves to immovable objects. As many as 40 people were arrested during the environmental action.
Protesters blocked roads in Westminster’s Whitehall and Soho’s Charing Circus during the demonstration.

SOT, Emil, Passer-by: “Honestly, I can’t say in my entire life have I seen someone drill themselves to concrete to stop from being arrested and then it took them all of 10 minutes to get them to the van. That speaks for itself I guess. That’s my reaction really, that’s pretty fun to watch, to be honest. That’s dedication and resilience if I’m honest.”

SOT, Indra, Protester: “I am very proud, I am incredibly proud and it’s sad that it’s come to this where we have peaceful normal citizens being here and feeling the only way they can actually be heard is to be arrested, to lock onto a street, to block a highway, to promote, to actually get on the news, because it’s not being talked about, it’s not being covered by any of the press. We are in a climate emergency, we’re now beginning to see it, so people should know why we’re here now, but my reaction is one of great joy and one of great sadness.”
