British tennis star Emma Raducanu’s childhood coach Harry Bushnell described his emotions and thoughts after the 18-year-old stormed to victory at the US Open, speaking from her former club in Bromley, south London, on Monday.
Canada-born Raducanu trained under Bushnell at the Parklangley Club from the age of six until she was 11. Bushnell showed off a trophy Raducanu won when she would’ve been just seven.
“I think we will see a lift in how many young ladies, young girls are playing sport. I think that there will be a real sense of ‘they can do it’, because Emma has done it. She has made the impossible possible. She said herself, it was always a dream of hers to win the Grand Slam, and it is for many people I guess. She has proven that dreams can come true, if you work hard”, he said.
Bushnell also spoke about the controversial comments made by former US tennis pro John McEnroe and British broadcaster Piers Morgan who slammed Raducanu for dropping out of Wimbledon earlier this year.
“She is mentally robust,” he said. “She’s proven all that she’s needed to prove to her doubters.”
Raducanu was an overwhelming underdog going into the US Open, even having to go through qualifiers, but won the tournament without dropping a single set. She’s the first British woman to win a Grand Slam since Virginia Wade back in 1977.

SOT, Harry Bushnell, Former coach of tennis player Emma Raducanu: “So, she was here from the age of around six to 10-11 years of age.”

SOT, Harry Bushnell, Former coach of tennis player Emma Raducanu:“I mean, it was obviously extremely emotional I think for anybody who was involved in Emma’s journey, anybody that knows her personally: school friends, coaches, the LTA, everybody. And certainly, as one of her one-to-one coaches for a few years, it was obviously the most incredible part of my own career. It was the first time I was involved in a Grand Slam Champion.”

SOT, Harry Bushnell, Former coach of tennis player Emma Raducanu: “Sure she was very similar to what you see on the TV. She was obviously a smaller more quiet version. Back then, one of my challenges was to get her to speak a little bit more and to come out of her shell a little bit more, which I would like to think I did a good job, judging by her interviews.”

SOT, Harry Bushnell, Former coach of tennis player Emma Raducanu: “The lesson we can all learn from wound, is that this girl is mentally quite robust. She does have an knack of going away, assessing things, and improving. She has proven all that she needed to prove to her doubters during the last couple of weeks.”

SOT, Harry Bushnell, Former coach of tennis player Emma Raducanu: “I think we will see a lift in how many young ladies, young girls are playing sport. I think that there will be a real sense of ‘they can do it’, because Emma has done it. She has made the impossible possible. She said herself, it was always a dream of hers to win the Grand Slam, and it is for many people I guess. She has proven that dreams can come true, if you work hard.”

SOT, Anthony, Student: “I think definitely it will bring more recognition, because your [roots?] are in the UK. She is going to be the next big thing for the UK, in the Olympics, kind of in the World Cup of Tennis, like it is coming home.”

SOT, Luke, Student: “Don’t forget Bromley! Come back! I want to get a photo.”
