UK: Garbage fills the streets as Brighton waste management strike continues

Piles of rubbish towered in the streets of Brighton on Thursday after a failed dispute between trash collectors’ unions and the city council.
Local residents reacted to the situation, expressing concern about the sheer volume of rubbish as well as the environmental impact and attraction of rodents to the chaos.
“Everyone generally needs to reduce their consumption don’t they. But yeah, I guess we do not see how much we are producing until we see it all like this. It is hard to kind of understand I guess,” stated local resident Lydia.
Up to 54 rubbish and recycling drivers from Cityclean, which belongs to the GMB union, have been on strike since 5 October and would likely continue until next month. The reason was a dispute with the Green-led city council over wages and working conditions, including the dismissal of drivers from long-standing jobs. The municipality acknowledged that it would take weeks to clear the rubbish backlog once the dispute was resolved.

SOT, Sue, Local resident: “I mean it brings all sorts of things to mind, is how much rubbish we actually have in our lives, and yeah, what do we do with it if the bin men go on strike? I don’t know really.”

SOT, Sue, Local resident: “I don’t think it is so much what we are consuming, it is the way we consume it. There is far too much packaging, that is obvious, isn’t it?”

SOT, Sue, Local resident: “I mean there are places where it is hard to pass on the pavement because the rubbish is encroaching on the pavement. So yeah, but I also feel for the bin men, because it is a pretty horrible job, and perhaps we do not appreciate them enough.”

SOT, Ed, Local resident: “Well it makes you realise how much excess waste people have, like it is quite profound. We live a bit further away from here, and it is the same everywhere, so it is quite scary to realise how much waste people have generally.”

SOT, Maddie, Local resident: “It is quite sad to see, yeah.”

SOT, Ed, Local resident: “I do not know when they are going to stop the strikes, but I guess we need to do more research into it, but it is pretty scary stuff.”

SOT, Ed, Local: “There is more and more pests about each day, so we need to keep watch and stuff really.”

SOT, Ed, Local resident: “I think the strikes will make people realise actually how we have to look after our bin men and council, and realise how much consumption we have as well. Ultimately they are doing for themselves and that, and make sure they are recognised in the community, but it is a big realisation we need to step up in relation to excess waste and stuff really.”

SOT, Lydia, Local resident: “I mean it is gotten a bit bonkers that there is literally nowhere for people to put any of their rubbish, and it is obviously not good for public health, but I also agree the workers should maybe be paid a little bit better. But yeah when it gets to the point that you can’t squeeze through the pavement it is a bit bonkers.”
