UK: Guardiola comments on Grealish transfer, Messi leaving Barcelona

Manchester City’s manager Pep Guardiola clarified his reasoning behind the latest transfer of the 25-year-old mid-fielder Jack Grealish on Friday.

Grealish is set to leave Aston Villa for Manchester City, with the completed deal being worth £100m (€118, $139m).

“We sell young players from [the] academy, for-loan players for £60m. When you sell for £60m, you can afford £100m. Otherwise, it could not have been possible”, said Guardiola.

The manager also made comments about the latest news from FC Barcelona, which announced a loss of close to €500m (£424m, $588m) between the seasons of 2019-20 and 2020-21.

Barcelona have also announced that football legend Lionel Messi will no longer be signing with the club due to financial obstacles.

While Guardiola shared words of ‘gratitude’ for Messi, the manager noted that the star “is not in our thoughts” in terms of next transfers.

The comments were made on the eve of Manchester City’s final game against Leicester City for the FA Community Shield at Wembley stadium.
