Almost 750 people attended Chess Fest, the UK’s largest outdoor chess festival, aimed to promote the game to inner-city communities, in London’s Trafalgar Square on Sunday.
Participants could be seen playing on chess boards that had been set up for the festival, including one giant chess board, beside the fountain.
The Chess Fest organiser explained how the event was almost at full capacity, having been limited to 750 people due to COVID-19 restrictions, and said that the UK grandmaster Michael Adams was also in attendance.
“I think chess is absolutely vital for the young, so much fun but it teaches an awful lot of life skills. It teaches them concentration, it teaches them determination, it teaches them great maths and literacy skills, but it gets them used to the consequences of their actions,” said the organiser.
The festival ran from July 16-18, after having been cancelled last year due to the pandemic.
SOT, Organiser of Chess Fest: “So, Chess Fest here down at Trafalgar Square, it’s the first time that chess has come back after the pandemic and we’re pretty much full to capacity. We’re unfortunately limited to 750 people at one time but we’re making the best of it. We’ve got a casual chess zone over there, giant chess over here, simultaneous displays with grandmaster Michael Adams who’s Britain’s number one.”
SOT, Organiser of Chess Fest: “I think chess is absolutely vital for the young, so much fun but it teaches an awful lot of life skills. It teaches them concentration, it teaches them determination, it teaches them great maths and literacy skills, but it gets them used to the consequences of their actions. If you make a bad move in chess, you don’t last very long, and you have to learn to live with that. So you try, you make plans, you make strategies, and this is all good stuff for later life.”
SOT, Anthony Mathurin, Chess teacher: “Well, chess ultimately is a mirror for self-introspection, that’s what it really is, it’s a journey of self. What it allows you to do is look at how your thought process pattern is, and if you can change your thought process pattern and understand that, then maybe you can make better decisions and take better action. That’s what it is ultimately.”
