Hundreds of people gathered for an anti-racism demo at a mural of England star Marcus Rashford in Manchester on Tuesday.

Nearly 700 people took the knee at the ‘Stand Up to Racism’ demonstration beside the mural located in Withington, Rashford’s home neighbourhood in south Manchester.

The Manchester United player took to Twitter to thank his supporters: “Overwhelmed. Thankful. Lost for words,” he wrote.

The mural was defaced after England lost the Euro 2020 final against Italy on penalties on Sunday.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were targeted on social media after missing penalties in the 3-2 shootout loss.

SOT, Local: “I think it is really amazing how everyone just come together and how no one or anything face him. Everyone is coming together as a community to support such a big thing that needs addressing.”

SOT, Local: “It is great to see people here to support Rashford since *inaudible* defaced. A lot of peoples reactions were so disgusting. So hopefully he sees everyone here to support him and understands that this is not how most of the people think. We do not accept racism. It is 2021 and we can not support that.”

SOT, Local: “So, we are here today, because obviously we have seen what is happening on social media recently. With Marcus Rashford and his foot performance, which does not matter when it comes to what people say on social media. He has gotten a lot of abuse and racism. As a result this mural here has been vandalised. But, the community is stronger and people have come together, put messages on that, nice images and things like that. People come together to stand against racism and that is what we’re all about.”

SOT, Local: “I think, it is wonderful and Black lives do matter. Absolutely wonderful tribute. Absolutely wonderful to see it.”

SOT, Local: “I find the memorial very moving. I teach children in the secondary school and *inaudible* football, and I was frightened that this might happen to them. So I find this really inspirational. I do hope that whoever perpetuated this gets caught by the police.”
