Manchester United fans reacted to the news of footballer Mason Greenwood being arrested on suspicion of rape and assault, with one fan stating ‘I just hope he’s innocent’ from Manchester’s Old Trafford stadium on Monday.
Calling ​​Greenwood an ‘excellent, first class player,’ the fan went on to state, “[He] must be responsible for his own actions though. I just hope he’s innocent.”
Another supporter said if the 20-year-old is guilty of the crimes, ‘he gets what’s coming to him,’ adding however that his career has been ‘tarnished’ even if he receives an innocent verdict.
Greenwood was arrested after a woman posted photos and a video on her Instagram page alleging incidents of violence. Greater Manchester Police said he remained in custody overnight for questioning and enquiries are ongoing.
Manchester United have since suspended Mason Greenwood. The club announced that the 20 year old striker would not be returning to training or to play in any matches “until further notice.” The club added “they do not condone violence of any kind.”
The allegations were released on Instagram on Sunday morning but have since been deleted. Greenwood hasn’t publicly responded to any of the claims.
