UK: Indigenous activists march in Glasgow as COP26 continues

Supporters of Minga Indigena, a civil society group and nonprofit advocating for indigenous peoples in the Americas facing climate change, marched in Glasgow on Wednesday, as the COP25 climate summit was underway.
“Today we are marching as indigenous peoples. We have brought together our group, which is Minga Indigena and we are together with a lot of other indigenous groups that are coming to COP26 to have our voices heard. We would like to hear the voice of our elders especially,” said Minga Indigena member Alejandro Fernandez.
Indigenous peoples, who are particularly vulnerable to climate change, have little representation in the talks. Minga Indigena was present at previous summits including in Paris, Madrid and Cancun.

We have brought together our group, which is Minga Indigena and we are together with a lot of other indigenous groups that are coming to COP 26 to [get] our voices heard. We would like to hear the voice of our elders especially.”

SOT Alejandro Fernandez, Member of Minga Indigena organisation: “Well, there are people going in now. They are accrediting, they are going inside. I hope that they will get the chance to speak and to what they are bringing from their lands.”

SOT Alejandro Fernandez, Member of Minga Indigena organisation: “We are here because we believe there is a chance. I think if we didn’t, we [wouldn’t] be trying to rebuild as we usually are.”

SOT Alejandro Fernandez, Member of Minga Indigena organisation: “I came here as a refugee when I was one year old. So it is nice to find it again, not so different. One of the volunteers have been trying to link the Minga’s activities to local stuff that some have [inaudible] grass root organisations that we are to link with grass root organisations which are visiting.”
