Angela Merkel discussed combatting climate change at the COP26 conference in Glasgow on Monday.

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany (German): “Here in Glasgow today, COP26 will be the last conference I’ll be at. The question naturally arises: Where are we today?”

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany (German): “We are not where we need to be. The reduction targets delivered by the contracting states, the NDCs, do not add up to what we agreed in Paris.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany (German): “The world, of course, hopes, and I emphasise this, that we will be better off by the end of this Glasgow conference. First of all, it is about improved goals. But above all, the next few days will be about the technical issues. How can we measure our target achievement more bindingly and develop a uniform measure?”

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany (German): “We know that the industrialised countries have a special responsibility. Of course, this also applies to the Federal Republic of Germany. That is why we have tightened our climate targets again. We want to save 65 percent of our emissions by 2030 compared to 1990 and be climate neutral by 2045.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany (German): “The fact that we agreed yesterday in the G20 to stop the international financing of coal-fired power plants, and now, is very important.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany (German): “We will not get ahead with government activities alone. Because it is about a comprehensive transformation of our life, work and economy. That is why I want to make a clear plea for pricing carbon emissions, CO2 emissions. With such a pricing, which we already have in the European Union, which is being introduced in China and which must be developed together with many others worldwide, we can get our industry, our economy, to find the technologically best and most efficient ways to do so to come to climate neutrality.”

SOT, Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany (German): “We must, and I also say: We can, implement the Paris Agreement; and not just in the course of this century, but, as we in the G20 have said, in the middle of this 21st century.”

The UN’s COP26 climate conference in Glasgow takes place from October 31 until November 12.
