Police scuffled with protesters as hundreds of people gathered for the annual ‘Million Mask March’ organised by hacktivist group Anonymous in Central London on Friday evening.
Protesters at Parliament Square could be seen throwing eggs at the police and repeatedly clashing with officers while they were conducting arrests. According to a police statement, they moved into the crowd after fireworks exploded near the crowd and struck participants of the demonstration.
The anti-government march, that first took place in 2012, was set to rally against corruption, inequality, homelessness, as well as lockdown restrictions.
Protesters were wearing Guy Fawkes inspired by the graphic novel and film V for Vendetta. Signs demanding the release of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, wanted by the United States over alleged espionage, could be seen at the location as well as ‘Anarchy’ flags and signs against lockdown restrictions and COVID-19 measures.
The march is an annual event on Bonfire Night, the anniversary of Guy Fawkes attempt to blow up the British Houses of Parliament.
