Dozens gathered outside Downing Street in London to protest against the Nationality and Borders bill on Sunday.
Protesters were shouting slogans such as ‘Say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here’ and held up signs demanding the bill be scrapped.
“We have to understand that racism is used to divide and rule. And that is why we have to oppose the Nationalities and Borders act,” said protester Weyman Bennet.
The bill is expected to go to the House of Lords for a debate on 5 January, after it was approved by MPs.
The bill caused opposition due to it’s immigration-related clauses, especially the clause that reportedly allows citizenship revocation without prior notice. Officials in turn were quoted as saying that the bill is aimed at ‘tackling illegal immigration.’
SOT, Ana Livingston, Protester: “This government’s policies are leading to what amount, to murder in the sea. Our countries in Europe are built very much from the work and the riches of poorer countries in the world. We have already stripped them of a lot of their wealth. People are victims of war and starvation and global warming. And we as a country have a big responsibility for this.”
SOT, Weyman Bennet, Protester: “It’s important to offer solidarity to people that are facing racism and division. But it’s also important to expose the government. That we’ve got a corrupt government that’s misdirecting people, to try and blame black people or brown people or Muslim people for the problems that are here. That’s what Boris Johnson was partying while 160000 of his citizens are dying and is misdirecting them to blame other people. This is what this bill is about. And we have to understand that racism is used to divide and rule. And that is why we have to oppose the nationalities and border act.”
