UK: Scottish Minister Sturgeon triples climate justice fund contribution

First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon pledged to triple the country’s contribution to the Climate Justice Fund, which allocates funding to developing nations to help deal with climate change impact.

She implored “rich countries” to step up and start paying their “debt to the developing and vulnerable countries across the world.”

“It is no longer good enough and there is no longer any excuse for not doing so,” she added, saying there is “no excuse for not achieving” the $100 billion (€87 billion) commitment.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres shared the achievements of the COP26 conference in Glasgow on Thursday, citing the growing alliance against coal pipelines.

During his speech, Guterres mentioned that he was inspired by civil society movements and the ‘voice of young people’. He also cited a 76 per cent reduction in coal pipelines globally as progress. With 28 new members, the Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) had grown to 165 members.

“44 countries and 32 companies and regions have committed at COP26 to transition from coal to clean power, and this will be an enormous task,” Guterres said.

But one relatively straightforward thing that should be achieved, and there is no excuse for not achieving is meeting that 100 billion (US) dollar commitment. To send a message to everyone, leaders around the negotiating table: step up in Glasgow, and let the rich countries start to pay their debt to the developing and vulnerable countries across the world. It is no longer good enough and there is no longer any excuse for not doing so.”
